When it was originally published in 1908 this was intended to be a pocket guide book to Romford, with smaller sections on Hornchurch, Rainham, Upminster and Dagenham. There are 'Notes for Visitors', including the information that a third class single ticket from Liverpool Street would cost one shilling and that 'Rates average about 7s.10d per annum, including poor rate. There is no immediate prospect of any increase.' There is a brief history of Romford, followed by a perambulation of the town pointing out its points of interest. Havering atte Bower and its history are examined, as are the hamlets around Romford Common and Collier Row, and the whole is padded out with advertisements of the time (including one for the recently established County High School for Girls).
