murder of Mary Emsley, when George Mullins claimed a reward
by accusing a cobbler, but who was then put on trial himself.
George Edalji was jailed for cattle maiming
in 1903, but Sir Arthur had him exonerated. When the Irish
Crown Jewels were stolen from Dublin Castle Doyle enquired
into the matter.
He secuired the eventual release of Oscar
Slater, convicted of a Glasgow killing. And he tried to save
Norman Thorne, an inadequate Sussex farmer, from the gallows.
In each case the person suspected by Doyle of perpetrating
the crime is revealed, as well as full background of his investigations.
