The 1923 production starred Eille Norwood
(Doyles favourite Holmes) and featured Lady Frances,
languishing in a Home tended by Doctor and Miss Schlessinger,
the latter enamoured of Charles Augustus Milverton, who blackmails
Lady Frances with a forged letter purporting to be from her
fiancé. Her physician is Doctor Watson, who, with the
help of a detective friend, finds that the heiress is being
drugged. Meanwhile, John Clays gang, controlled by Sebastian
Moran, are tunnelling beneath the house where Lady Frances
fiancé is being held with the aim of robbing a bank.
With the help of a dummy and a District Messenger, Holmes
traps the criminals.
Spectacularly illustrated with 23 full page
photographs of the original West End production and end-papers
from the programme: this is a collectors piece to treasure.
